Job Description

**This is a Monday through Friday position from 8:00 am. to 5:00 p.m. shift. **

Position Summary:

Manage a team of Sales Representatives within a region to achieve profitable revenue and tonnage growth objectives with local DSD accounts. Develop productive relationships with local grocery and food service chains and independents. Manage interactions with local distributors. 


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of Sales Reps to achieve revenue and tonnage growth objectives. A key contributor to customer sales, budgeting, account receivable, and profit/loss results.

  • Develop the skills of assigned Sales Representatives to increase sales and profitability.

  • Motivate, monitor, evaluate and manage the performance of assigned personnel.

  • Develop and execute well-thought-out end retailer plans and sales strategies. 

  • Participate in developing timely and accurate reports and forecasts.   

  • Help develop and implement the Area sales plan to achieve short- and long-term sales objectives. Lead the development of the sales plan for the district. Work with Sales Representatives to develop accurate sales budgets. 

  • Help recruit, select, develop, and supervise the Area sales team.

  • Ensure that Sales Representatives are effectively deployed within the district to cover assigned accounts and identify and develop new customers adequately.

  • Review assigned accounts’ sales trends by product/product category over time and in response to V&V sales promotions to develop account-specific sales strategies and business cases to introduce new products, displace competitors, increase shelf space (retail customers), and add menu items using V&V products (food service customers).

  • Establish and communicate priorities, set fair but aggressive sales objectives, and monitor the performance of Sales Representatives.

  • Motivate, inspire and coach sales personnel to meet or exceed sales objectives.

  • Ensure that marketing and sales promotion programs and new product introductions are effectively implemented within the district. Recommend marketing and sales promotion programs to drive sales growth. Monitor gross and net sales and keep the two in a proper relationship.

  • Report conflicts between Area brokers or distributors and V&V’s direct sales activity.

  • In coordination with other District Managers, Key Account Managers, and the Area sales team, proactively build management-level customer relationships with overall account plans and sales strategies for local grocery chains. Coordinate efforts with Area sales personnel to ensure their effective implementation.

  • Assures proper and safe product handling, freshness, and presentation at retail.    

  • Develop relationships with customers in the district. Ensure excellent customer sales and service, positioning V&V as a “value-creating” supplier and business partner. 

  • Drive ongoing sales process improvements.

  • Use V&V sales promotions to interest customers in trying new products and, in follow-up, leverage accounts’ promotional period sales results to drive repeat purchases.

  • Coordinate with other DM’s to manage relationships across the area and region and to identify and capitalize on business opportunities. 

  • Responsible for complying with all Safe Quality Food (SQF) policies/procedures and requirements for the position. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Skill Required:

  • Strong sales skills; ability to train and develop sales reps, to lead by example, and to step in as needed to resolve issues with customers and to raise the bar. Able to develop sales reps into DM’s.

  • Effective supervisor and leader.

  • Knowledgeable of DSD sales.

  • Able to take ownership for the DSD business in a geographic territory. Will lead his/her team in identifying and pursuing opportunities to expand sales with existing customers, grow the customer base, and increase penetration within the District.

  • Fully fluent  in Spanish; effective business English (written and spoken).

  • Bicultural understanding and awareness of Latino and American cultures.

  • Hands-on and can-do orientation.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build very good working relationships with customers, and all key interfaces.

  • Analytic skills (to evaluate trends and identify opportunities); comfortable with numbers.

  • Computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint, database report-reading and analysis.)

  • Understands retail merchandising and is able to improve our presence / presentation in the stores.

  • Knows the community.

Necessary Experience:


  • Outside Business to Business sales experience and proven track record, including account management.

  • Experience in Direct Store Sales and Delivery. 

  • Experience in DSD logistics – in understanding and structuring sales routes.

  • Formal supervisory responsibility over an outside / remote staff.  Preferably has supervised DSD drivers and/or territory sales reps.

  • Minimum ten years total work experience.


  • Has worked with (sold to) local grocery and/or foodservice trade, and has established relationships.

  • Has experience in food, preferably perishables, ideally dairy.

  • Ability to back up the Route Operations Manager, and grow to succeed the RSM.

  • Has lived and worked at least three years within the territory.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
